What makes an ATV "two-up"
A two-up ATV is designed from the frame up to carry a driver and one passenger. The passenger sits slightly higher and behind the driver, with their own handholds and footrests. That's very different from squeezing two people onto a single-rider quad, which isn't safe: the extra weight changes how the machine handles, and the passenger has nothing proper to hold. If you want to ride together on one machine, a purpose-built two-up is the only way to do it.
Who two-up suits
- Couples where one person wants to drive and the other would rather enjoy the scenery and take photos.
- Nervous first-timers who'd like to see what it's like before driving themselves.
- Anniversary and birthday rides where staying close is the whole point.
- Riders who want to split costs on one rental rather than two.
If you both want to drive, two single-rider quads are a better fit.
Riding two-up well
For the driver: go a little slower than you would alone. The extra weight means longer braking distances and a different feel in turns. Ease onto the throttle and avoid sudden stops.
For the passenger: hold the passenger handholds rather than the driver, keep your feet on the footrests, and lean with the driver in turns rather than against them. Agree on a tap signal for "slow down" or "stop for a photo."
Ask about a ride briefing that covers both seats, so the passenger knows what to expect too.

Where to ride together
Two-up riding is happiest on smooth, wide routes: graded desert roads and broad washes with room to see what's coming. Our beginner routes page explains the kind of terrain that suits a relaxed ride. Then plan the rest of the day with our guide to things to do in Laughlin for couples.

Two-up or two quads?
Both make a great date; they just feel different. On a two-up, you're sharing every moment: the passenger can point things out, take photos and simply enjoy the view while the driver concentrates on the ground ahead. On two single-rider quads, you each get the fun of driving and the small thrill of figuring it out yourselves. If you can't decide, think about who in your pair actually wants to steer. If the answer is "both of us," book two quads.
Comfort tips for passengers
- Wear sunglasses or goggles; passengers catch more dust from the front wheels.
- Bring a light layer, since the passenger seat gets more breeze.
- Take a short break every half hour or so to stretch.
- Keep water in a small backpack you can reach easily.
